Tool maintenance guide
La Fabriculture 's expertise in metalworking enables us to design durable, sturdy tools made from quality materials such as stainless steel, steel and galvanized metal. Here are a few tips on how to properly maintain these materials and preserve the longevity of your tools.
Steel care
Steel is a solid material, but it can rust if exposed to moisture or the elements. Regular maintenance is therefore essential to preserve its longevity.
- Regular cleaning: Use a damp cloth and soapy water to remove dirt and residues from the steel. Dry thoroughly after each cleaning to prevent rust formation.
- Rust prevention: Apply a thin layer of protective oil (linseed or gun oil) to the steel surface to prevent oxidation, especially after each use in damp conditions.
- Removing rust: If traces of rust appear, rub gently with steel wool or a wire brush. For a gentler method, you can use white vinegar or baking soda mixed with water to remove rust, then rinse and dry immediately.
- Additional protection: For tools frequently exposed to the outdoors, apply an anti-corrosion coating, such as a special paint or metal treatment product, to create a barrier against moisture.
Careful maintenance of your steel tools ensures their robustness and performance over time, while preventing rust.
Stainless steel care
Stainless steel is a corrosion-resistant material, but it can lose its luster or develop stains over time. Here's how to preserve its quality:
- Daily cleaning: After each use, clean stainless steel with hot, soapy water and a non-abrasive sponge. Avoid products that could scratch the surface.
- Stains: To remove stains, apply a mixture of white vinegar and water with a soft cloth, then rinse well. Avoid metal sponges and cleaners containing chlorine.
- Scratches: If scratches appear, use a polishing paste specially formulated for stainless steel to remove them.
- Shine: To restore shine, apply a thin layer of olive oil or a product specifically formulated for stainless steel. This forms a protective barrier against fingerprints and stains.
Galvanized metal care
Galvanized metal, protected by a layer of zinc, is rust-resistant, but requires regular maintenance to extend its life:
- Clean with warm, soapy water and a soft cloth to remove dirt. Avoid acidic or abrasive products that could damage the zinc coating.
- To remove stains, rub gently with a solution of water and white vinegar, then rinse well with clean water.
- If scratches appear, repair them with touch-up paint or zinc spray to prevent rust.
- If you're not going to be using your galvanized metal items for a long time, store them in a dry place to protect them from moisture.
Copper care
Copper is a naturally resistant material, but it can oxidize over time and develop a greenish (verdigris) patina. Here's how to keep it in good condition:
- Regular cleaning: Wipe copper regularly with a soft cloth to remove dust and fingerprints.
- Deep cleaning: To remove stains and patina, use a mixture of lemon juice and fine salt. Gently rub the surface with a cloth soaked in this mixture, then rinse with lukewarm water and dry immediately.
- Restore shine: You can use a paste made from flour, vinegar and salt to restore copper's shine. Apply the paste, leave for a few minutes, then rub with a soft cloth and rinse with clean water.
- Protection: To preserve copper's shine and slow the appearance of verdigris, apply a thin layer of beeswax or protective varnish. This will form a barrier against moisture and oxidation.
By following these tips, you can keep your copper tools in excellent condition and extend their life.
Brass care
Brass is an attractive and robust alloy, but it can become tarnished through natural oxidation. Here are a few tips to keep it in good condition:
- Regular cleaning: Wipe brass with a soft cloth to remove dust.
- Deep cleaning: Use lukewarm water and mild soap for a more intense cleaning.
- Revive the shine: Mix lemon juice with baking soda to form a paste. Apply to brass, leave to act, then rub gently with a soft cloth. Rinse with lukewarm water and dry immediately.
- Protection: After cleaning, apply a coat of colorless metal wax or protective varnish to prevent oxidation and maintain shine.
Maintaining your garden tools is essential to prolonging their life and preserving their performance. Regular maintenance will prevent damage and ensure their lasting quality.
