The stainless steel used in Opinel's blades is an optimized grade that ensures both high resistance to corrosion and high mechanical performance.
The blade offers excellent sharpness and great resistance to abrasion, allowing it to withstand regular contact with hard materials, such as ceramics, before needing resharpening. Stainless steel has the advantage of requiring no special maintenance under normal conditions of use, unlike carbon steel. However, it may have its limits when exposed to prolonged contact with aggressive environments (acid, saltwater, cleaning agents, etc.).
Invented in 1955 by Marcel Opinel, the Virobloc safety ring is featured on all folding knives starting from N°06. Cut from stainless steel, the Virobloc consists of two parts: a fixed part and a sliding part. In addition to locking the blade in the open position (for safety during use), it is now possible to lock the blade in the closed position (for safety during transport).
